Freedom of Movement

What first comes to mind when you hear the word, restraint? Maybe you think of something being bound by rope. Maybe you think of hands in handcuffs.

What about when you hear the word, prison? Do you think of a small jail cell with metal bars? Do you think of the absence of freedom?

What do these themes have in common? Movement.

When something is restrained we attempt to limit its movement. You can’t move your arms freely in handcuffs, nor can you run if your legs are bound by rope. When one is in jail they’re movement is limited. An individual’s movement is restricted to the tiny space of their cell, unless given permission to move elsewhere.

Freedom of movement is the common theme. It’s so integral to human existence. When we don’t take our health seriously, when our movement is restricted—via being out of shape, rife with aches and pains due to inactivity—are we not restraining ourselves from the freedom of movement?

When you’re unable to run with your children, when you can’t participate in activities with them, when you aren’t able to be an active participant in your life… Is that not a prison cell of your own making?

Taking care of your health is about more than vanity. It’s about independence. It’s about confidence. It’s about being able to do what you want, when you want, without wondering whether you’re physically able to.

That is freedom of movement. That is freedom. That is what’s at stake.
